Between September 10-15, 2018, the Institute of Geology and Seismology participated in the activities of the International School of Seismology "Modern methods of processing and interpretation of seismic data". The event took place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and was organized by the Research Center "Unique Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (Russian Federation), in collaboration with the Geophysical Service of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Institute of Geology, Seismic-Resistant Constructions and Seismology of the Republic of Tajikistan.
IGS was represented by Dr. Igor Nicoara - director of IGS, Dr. hab. Rașid Burtiev - head of laboratory, Ion Ilieș - Head of the Experimental Seismology Center of the Institute of Geology and Seismology of the ASM, Sergiu Troian - doctoral student, scientific researcher.
The event addressed many topics related to continuous monitoring of seismic outbreaks, modern methods of collecting, storing and processing seismic monitoring data, as well as risk reduction strategies in areas exposed to seismic hazard. Dr. Igor Nicoară presented during the plenary session the methods and tools of seismic monitoring available to IGS, and especially the experience of joint monitoring of the Vrancea outbreak with INFP Romania. Also at one of the sessions Mr. Dr. hab. Rashid Burtiev presented a report on the probabilistic methods of seismic risk assessment.
Numerous activities for the participants were organized among the presentations and reports of the conference, including the traditional general knowledge contest (GeoVictorina), football championship and a visit to the famous Nurek dam (photo gallery).
The International School of Seismology, which is in its thirteenth edition, aims to strengthen relations and increase collaboration between relevant institutions in the CIS, which will result in reducing seismic risk in the area.
